US Government Moving to Cloud Servers

In an effort to cut infrastructure, real estate and energy costs, the federal government is planning to shut down nearly 40% of their in-house data centers by 2015. Currently, the federal government spends about $80 billion on IT annually; however, by shutting down more than 800 of their data centers over the next four years, they could end up saving the country about $5 billion dollars. Government data center consolidation and closings are not entirely due to massive budget deficits. It is part of the plans to move as much as one quarter of federal information technology enterprise to the “cloud”.
