After two years since the release of Debian 6.0 “Squeeze”, the Debian project team has officially released the new major version, 7.0 of its venerated Linux distribution. Code-named “Wheezy”, the new release brings a large number of major changes and new features including multiarch support, software speech support, tools for deploying private clouds, an improved installer, multimedia codecs, and many other features.

Overview of the key new features in Debian 7.0.

The Debian project never puts out releases until they are thoroughly tested and bug-fixed. The new Debian 7.0 “Wheezy” is no exception. After many months of development, Debian is ready with another stable, well-tested distribution. This new version of Debian brings in several changes and includes many new features.

Here’s the recap of what’s new in Debian 7.0.

Apache 2.2.22

GIMP 2.8.2

Linux kernel 3.2

LibreOffice 3.5.4 replaces OpenOffice.org

PackageKit replaces the previous graphical package management stack on GNOME

An updated version of the GNOME desktop environment 3.4

KDE Plasma Workspaces and KDE Applications 4.8.4

XFCE 4.8 desktop environment

Perl 5.14.2, Python 2.7.3 and 3.2.3, PHP 5.4.4, Ruby 1.9

MySQL 5.5.30, Samba 3.6.6

Support for UEFI installation on x86-64 (amd64) systems

FOSS solutions for various fields of science got improved coverage

More than 36,000 other ready-to-use software packages

And other improvements

In addition, with this release, Debian supports multiple architectures (multiarch) on the same machine. This means that users can now install 32-bit and 64-bit versions of software on the same computer, and the dependencies will all be correctly resolved, automatically.

Another important update is that Debian is cloud friendly now. In version 7.0 Debian has laid stress on the ease of creation of private clouds using Xen Cloud Platform (XCP) and Openstack suite. Debian images are also provided on the major public cloud platforms such as Amazon EC2, Windows Azure, and Google Compute Engine.

It’s also worth noting that Debian 7.0 is suitable for many different use cases and can be installed on devices ranging from handheld systems to supercomputers. A total of nine hardware architectures are supported in the new Debian release, including 32-bit PC/Intel IA-32 (i386), 64-bit PC/Intel EM64T/x86-64 (amd64), Motorola/IBM PowerPC (powerpc), Sun/Oracle SPARC (sparc), and Intel Itanium (ia64).

We are currently experiencing an issue with one of our web hosting servers.

We will update accordingly once this server is back online.

UPDATE: this server is now online.

It has been quite a while since we’ve had a problem with any web hosting service. This one for example, had been operating for over a year since its last maintenance reboot.

The cause of the problem was a operating system update gone wrong. We had tested this update, and implemented it in many other servers, but this one particular server did not like the update.

According to the latest Domain Name Industry report from Verisign, about six million domain names were added to the Internet in the final quarter of 2012, bringing the total number of registered domain names to over 252 million globally across all top-level domains (TLDs).

A quick look at domain name registration landscape in 2012.

The worldwide domain name registration has grown by 11.8 per cent from the previous year. Among TLDs applied for in 2012, the .com and .net suffixes remained the most popular, reaching a combined total of nearly 121.1 million domain names. By the end of December 2012, the domain names in .com totaled more than 106 million while .net addresses equaled almost 15 million. The .com and .net TLDs also accounted for the majority of newly registered domain names, with growing renewal rates. In total, 8 million .com and .net domains were registered during the fourth quarter of 2012.

Outside of the two largest TLDs, country code top-level domains (ccTLDs) increased more than 5 percent quarter-over-quarter and 21.6 percent year-over-year, now totaling 110.2 million names. In order of zone size, the TLDs to receive high ranks included .de (Germany), .uk (United Kingdom), .cn (China), .tk (Tokelau), .nl (Netherlands), .ru (Russian Federation), .info and .org.

All in all, in year 2012, the domain name landscape has expanded by 19.6 million.

After launching the first wave of its 22 nm Ivy Bridge processors almost a year ago, Intel releases a budget-friendly line of processors based on the current generation architecture. The new Celeron, Pentium, and Core dual-core CPUs are now available to the public with prices ranging from $42 to $117.

A treat for budget-conscious silicon lovers.

Aimed at the budget end of the market, it’s the first time Intel’s low-end processors feature its latest generation CPU architecture. This means that even the most budget-conscious consumers can now take advantage of the new chips’ advanced features such as DDR3 support, power savings from the die-shrink, an improved integrated GPU, and more.

So, here is a brief rundown of the specs for the new processors:

There are three new Celeron chips. They include:

Celeron G1610 – 2.6GHz, 2MB Cache, 650MHz/1050MHz GPU, 55 watts, priced $42

Celeron G1610T – 2.3GHz, 2MB Cache, 650MHz/1050MHz GPU, 35 watts, priced $42

Celeron G1620 – 2.7Ghz, 2MB Cache, 650MHz/1050MHz GPU, 55 watts, priced $52

Celerons are dual-core and they don’t include hyper-threading.

There are four Pentium chips:

Pentium G2010 – 2.8GHz, 3MB Cache, 650MHz/1050MHz GPU, 55 watts, priced $64

Pentium G2020 – 2.9GHz, 3MB Cache, 650MHz/1050MHz GPU, 55 watts, priced $64

Pentium G2020T – 2.5GHz, 3MB Cache, 650MHz/1050MHz GPU, 35 watts, priced $64

Pentium G2130 – 3.2GHz, 3MB Cache, 55 watts, priced $86

Pentiums come with two cores and two threads.

And finally, there’s a new Core chip, Intel’s flagship CPU:

Core i3-3210 – 3.2GHz, 3MB Cache, 650MHz/1050MHz, 55 watts, priced $117

It has two cores, four threads and hyper-threading.

All the new chips are compatible with existing Intel’s Socket 1155 motherboards; so if you are planning to downgrade to one of these budget processors you can do so without having to upgrade motherboards.

Take advantage of Ivy Bridge-based dedicated hosting.

Need an efficient and powerful server? Choose one of ServerPoint.com’s dedicated servers based on Intel’s latest Ivy Bridge CPUs. With Ivy Bridge-based dedicated hosting or cloud VPS hosting from ServerPoint.com you can now take advantage of Intel’s new technology and benefit from unprecedented computational power, better efficiency and improved performance.

Long-characterized as the technology of the future, silicon photonics becomes front and center as the technology of today with Intel showing off a prototype photonic rack at the Open Compute Summit in Santa Clara, January 16. Intel has spent the last decade working on silicon photonics, and is now collaborating with Facebook and the Open Compute Project to enable the technology, open-sourcing a photonic receptacle design to the OCP.

Silicon photonics: transforming server and rack design.

Silicon photonics is a new technology that uses large-scale complimentary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) fabrication methods to integrate optics and optoelectronic functions onto the same chip. In silicon photonics huge amounts of data are moved at very high speeds over a thin optical fiber rather than using electrical signals over a copper cable. A silicon photonics chip can support 100Gb/s transmission on a tiny chip smaller than the size of a postage stamp. The result is faster communications, lower power consumption, lower costs and smaller devices that can be easily mass produced.

Silicon photonics can transform the way data centers and supercomputers operate. With silicon photonics a rack-mounted server can be “disaggregated” – enabling the storage, compute, and I/O functions to be upgraded independently. The photonic rack can provide increased bandwidth and extreme power efficiency compared to today’s copper interconnects. By using silicon photonics-based solutions data centers can eliminate performance bottlenecks and gain long-term upgradability while saving significant costs in space and energy consumption.

Reshaping the future of web hosting.

The silicon photonics technology opens the door to a world of possibilities in web hosting. For instance, the ability to easily swap individual server components will enable greater speed, flexibility, and scalability in cloud hosting solutions. In addition, the technology will provide distinct cost advantage over the hosting solutions based on older optical technologies. For web hosting customers this means faster, more scalable and reliable web hosting at a lower cost.

Stay tuned for more updates on the silicon photonics technology.

Israeli web security startup 6Scan has launched a free website security suite aiming to protect small businesses from website vulnerabilities and malware. Now small business owners can focus their effort on expanding their online presence while 6Scan scans and automatically fixes security vulnerabilities in real time with no manual intervention required.

Securing websites, customers and revenue streams with 6Scan.

6Scan is the world’s first website security service that automatically scans and updates to protect against the latest security issues on the web. Building on the company’s highly regarded product, a security plugin for WordPress, 6Scan extends vulnerability scan and fix capabilities to websites running on Apache servers and also offers new features like malware detection. 6Scan ensures airtight website security by employing active penetration testing algorithms to find security issues and automatically fix them.

There are two different scanners used in 6Scan service – one detects generic problems that fall into top 10 categories of web application security risks and the other scanner finds known vulnerabilities in popular web applications reported on sites like OSVBD, Packet Storm Security and others, as well as risks discovered internally by 6Scan’s team of website security experts. Key problems 6Scan protects against include SQL injections, cross-site scripting, directory transversals, remote file inclusion and many other top security risks. The scanning part of the 6Scan service is offered for free, but features like fixing and malware removal, a web application firewall and additional email and SMS support are only available on a monthly subscription basis.

According to 6Scan president Nitzan Miron, the ability to fix existing vulnerabilities without requiring website owners to take additional actions is what sets 6scan apart from similar web-based solutions. With 6Scan suite installed, no further action is required to keep websites protected. The Dual Scan technology used in 6Scan performs free real-time scans for risks and malware infections. The Auto-Fix feature will then automatically fix problems, unlike competitor tools, which require manual intervention or service engagements. Without affecting website’s performance, 6Scan’s service creates a clean website that is hardened against further attacks.

Tuesday, December 11, 2012 saw the release of Intel’s new server-class processor series formally known as the Atom processor S1200 product family. Intel is touting the Atom S1200 as the industry’s first 6-watt system-on-chip (SoC) delivering the required datacenter features such as error code correction, 64-bit software and operating systems support, and virtualization technologies.

Under the S1200 hood.

As dedicated hosting and web content servers providers are increasingly faced with the need to maximize efficiency while reducing space and energy costs, Intel’s newly released Atom processor S1200 product family promises to address that need. The Atom S1200 microprocessors’ energy-sipping, industrial-strength capabilities allow service providers to drive down costs and energy consumption. Servers based on the new S1200 processors will deliver high levels of efficiency, reliability and manageability while enabling significant cost reduction.

As for the Atom SoC itself, it includes two physical cores and supports up to a total of four threads enabled with Hyper-Threading technology. The S1200 comes in three variants with frequency ranging from 1.6GHz to 2.0GHz, each of which include a memory controller supporting up to 8 GB of DDR3 memory, eight lanes of PCI Express 2.0, Error-Correcting Code (ECC) support for higher reliability and other features an x86-based data center requires. With support for Intel virtualization technologies, x86 compatibility and 64-bit support the Atom S1200 is truly Intel’s first SoC built for servers and data centers.

Reliable and efficient dedicated hosting powered by Atom S1200 processors.

At ServerPoint.com we strive to stay on top of new technology so that we can provide our customers with the best services based on the latest products. When it comes to dedicated server hosting, we custom build our dedicated servers using only the highest quality components to ensure the best hosting experience to you, our customers. Intel’s recently released Atom processor S1200 product family raises the standards of efficiency, reliability and processing power, allowing dedicated servers to reach new levels of extreme performance. So now we are working on including the Atom S1200 CPUs in our Value Dedicated Servers and Enterprise Dedicated Servers range.
