How do I start a web site?

Step 1 - Domain Registration

If you don't yet have your own domain, ServerPoint can make it easy to register one. The process is fully automated so that you don't have to configure the dozens of parameters required for a domain to point to a web site on the Internet.

However, if you already have your own domain, our staff can help reconfigure it to get it moved to our servers.

When your domain becomes functional, and your web site is in our servers, anyone who types your domain into their browser will be able to visit your home on the net.

How to register a domain? It's easy. While you are ordering a hosting plan from us, our order process will give you the option to register one.

Step 2 - Sign up for a web hosting plan

If you are new at hosting, start with our lower end shared hosting plans and move up as you need more features and capacity.

What is shared hosting anyway? Basically, a very powerful server is used to host the web sites of hundreds, or maybe even thousands, of customers. Each customer has their own login information to their own storage space on the server where their web sites are stored.

When reading through our hosting plans, you will see a lot of terminology that you might not know about. Things such as "cron", "SSH", "FTP", etc. If you don't know what they are, then most likely you don't need them. All you need to know is what's on step 3 and 4 below.

Step 3 - Design your web site

If you don't yet have a web site, or are not hiring someone to design one, we have a variety of tools to help you out. None of these tools require knowledge about coding and/or web design!

Step 4 - Publish your web site

Software that supports a file transfer protocol, such as the popular FTP protocol, is all you need. And there's plenty of them around the Internet for free. Plus, our support sections include easy video tutorials that will teach you how to get them, how to configure them and how to use them.

Popular web site design software programs such as Microsoft FrontPage, Microsoft Web Expressions, Adobe GoLive and Dreamweaver are also supported.
