Our architecture, from server to the Internet, is as follows:

Servers are connected to edge Cisco or Foundry switches
Each edge switch is connected to two independent core switches
Each core switch, besides being connected to each other, is connected to an independent router
Our routers are each connected to independent Internet providers, coming into our building through separate areas and through independent underground fiber lines

Whether a switch, router or Internet upstream fails, our network's redundancy recovers within a matter of seconds. In fact, our network's uptime is so high that downtime is only about 10 minutes a year, and that's mostly caused by problems with Internet upstreams or maintenance events.
