I have installed my SQL Server Express 2008 on the VPS. Enable remote connections is checked and tcp/ip is enabled. I have created databases and other users besides the default.

It all connects fine when I use AD5QA\SQLEXPRESS in the servername but when I use the IP or IP,1433 it doesnt connect inside or remotely.

Any suggestions?

Hi Tom,

What exact error are you getting when you try to connect? Please make sure that 'Allow remote connections to this server' is checked under 'Connections' in Server Properties. Also make sure that port 1433 is opened in the firewall.

If you're not sure, please open a ticket with the server login details so that we can have a check.

This is the message that I am receiving:

Cannot connect to 216.108.226.210.

Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)

I have the exception in the firewall for port 1433 and tried it when the firewall was off. 'Allow remote connections to this server is checked' in the database | connections menu.

In addition my plesk does not have a dropdown to add a mssql database just mysql.
