Backups are the most important thing you can add to your VPS hosting plan. We’ve replaced our old backup system with a new one that’s faster, more reliable, and available at all six data centers.
Two backup plans
4-day retention costs 20% of your VPS base price. If your virtual server costs $5/month, backups are $1/month. This keeps the last 4 days of daily snapshots, which is enough to recover from recent mistakes or problems.
30-day retention costs 40% of your VPS base price. This keeps 30 days of snapshots, which we recommend for production servers. If someone deletes important data on Monday and nobody notices until the following week, you still have copies going back a month. For a $5/month VPS, this is $2/month.
Both plans work for Linux VPS and Windows VPS hosting.
How the new system works
The backup system uses commercial backup software and stores your backups on a separate cluster, not on the same Ceph storage pool as your virtual server disks. That means if something happens to the storage your VPS runs on, your backups are still safe on different hardware.
Backups are incremental after the initial full backup. That means only changed data is backed up each day, so most backups complete in a minute or two. Restores are also faster than the old system because the backup format is optimized for quick reads.
How to sign up
You can add backup service to any existing VPS from the Client Portal, or select it when deploying a new virtual server. Restores are managed through the portal as well. If you have questions about backups for your VPS hosting or dedicated server setup, contact us.
