Can I use my own Windows license on a VPS?

By ServerPoint's Team January 20, 2026

Can I buy a Windows license online and have you install it?

Unfortunately, no. We cannot install customer-provided Windows licenses on our VPS platform.

Why we can’t use your license

There are two main reasons:

Administrative burden

Presenting to Microsoft which servers have customer-owned licenses for each client would create a significant amount of paperwork for our staff. As a Microsoft Certified Service Provider, we have reporting obligations that would become unmanageable if we tracked individual customer licenses across our infrastructure.

License validity concerns

We have no way to verify if a license you purchased is valid for use on a VPS. Most Windows licenses sold online fall into two categories:

  • OEM licenses: These are tied to specific hardware and cannot legally be transferred to a virtual machine hosted by a third party
  • Retail licenses: These are licensed by Microsoft for use on your own hardware, not on a hosted VPS

Both types violate Microsoft’s licensing terms when used on a cloud hosting provider’s infrastructure.

How Windows licensing works with us

As a Microsoft Certified Service Provider, we provide properly licensed Windows through Microsoft’s Service Provider License Agreement (SPLA). The licensing cost is automatically included in your VPS price based on the number of CPU cores.

This means:

  • Your Windows installation is fully compliant with Microsoft licensing
  • No separate license purchases or tracking required
  • We handle all licensing paperwork and compliance

You can view the total cost including Windows licensing when configuring your VPS in ServerPoint’s Client Portal.
